Phobias

A phobia is an intense fear of a specific object, situation, or experience. When our nervous system senses danger, we are wired to want to escape or avoid what feels threatening. This response can be helpful when there is actual danger, but with a phobia, the brain’s alarm system is responding to something that isn’t actually dangerous. Avoiding the feared situation may bring short-term relief, but it can reinforce the false alarm and make the fear stronger over time.

Phobias can involve almost anything. Some common fears include:

  • Needles, injections, or medical procedures

  • Blood or injuries

  • Insects, spiders, bees, or other animals

  • Flying

  • Elevators or small/enclosed spaces

  • Heights

  • Driving

  • Vomiting

  • Storms or severe weather

How Phobias Keep Going

  • When something feels threatening, avoiding it often brings immediate relief. Unfortunately, that relief can reinforce the brain’s message that the situation really was dangerous and that avoidance was what kept you safe.

  • Over time, the fear may become stronger and avoidance can expand. You might begin planning around the fear, relying on others, seeking reassurance, or avoiding important activities altogether.
